The more I study Scripture, the more I admire the character of God.

The Bible reveals many aspects of His nature, but there are certain attributes that have shaped my understanding of who He is and strengthened my relationship with Him. These characteristics remind me that God is holy, just, loving, merciful, and completely trustworthy.

Here are eight attributes of God that I find especially admirable.

 

1. GOD IS HOLY

To me, this is God’s most important attribute.

God is holy, righteous, and pure. He cannot tolerate sin because it is completely contrary to His nature.

Since we were created in God’s image, our goal should be to become more like Him each day. Every decision we make should be measured against His holiness. When we understand that God sees us through perfectly holy eyes, it inspires us to pursue lives that honour Him.

“For God has not called us for impurity but in holiness.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:7

“Be holy, for I am holy.” — Leviticus 11:44

“You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.” — Leviticus 19:2

 

2. GOD IS SLOW TO ANGER

This is one of my favourite characteristics of God.

He is a loving Father whose first response is compassion rather than condemnation. His love for humanity was so great that He came into the world through Yeshua to accomplish what we could never accomplish ourselves.

Many people imagine God as eager to punish sinners.

Scripture paints a different picture.

“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.” — Psalm 145:8

God’s patience should never be mistaken for indifference.

The Bible makes it clear that God is slow to anger—not that He never becomes angry. His wrath is His righteous response to persistent evil and rebellion.

“Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him.” — Romans 5:9

“Let no one deceive you… because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient.” — Ephesians 5:6

Throughout Scripture we see examples of God’s judgment, including the Flood and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. These accounts remind us that while God is patient and merciful, He also takes holiness seriously.

As followers of Yeshua, our calling is to pursue God’s truth faithfully, even when it challenges the values of the world around us.

 

3. GOD IS NOT A RESPECTER OF PERSONS

God’s standards do not change according to popular opinion or personal preference.

What is right remains right, and what is wrong remains wrong because God’s righteousness never changes.

God does not need humanity—we need Him.

He existed before creation and will continue forever. His commands are not given because He benefits from our obedience, but because He knows what leads to life.

Whether people acknowledge His existence or not does not change the reality of who He is.

 

4. GOD NEVER CHANGES

One of the greatest comforts for believers is knowing that God’s character never changes.

Human culture changes.

Opinions change.

Standards change.

God does not.

“God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind.” — Numbers 23:19

Yeshua taught His followers to deny themselves daily and pursue life in the Spirit. As believers, we grow closer to God through prayer, studying His Word, obedience, and surrendering our sinful desires.

God will never reshape His holiness to accommodate human rebellion.

Instead, He lovingly calls us to be transformed into His likeness.

 

5. GOD IS MERCIFUL

This attribute always fills me with hope.

God delights in showing mercy to those who humble themselves before Him.

His mercy gives people time to repent and return to Him before judgment comes.

“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.” — Luke 6:36

“To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness.” — Daniel 9:9

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.” — Hebrews 4:16

Every day that God gives us is another opportunity to seek Him.

 

6. GOD IS FORGIVING

God’s forgiveness flows from His mercy.

What hope would any of us have without hearing the words,

“I forgive you.”

Because God forgives us, He also calls us to forgive others.

“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” — Matthew 6:14

The Bible reminds us that Satan continually accuses God’s people.

Yet through Yeshua, those who repent and trust in Him can receive forgiveness and restoration.

“Without faith it is impossible to please God.” — Hebrews 11:6

While we are alive, God’s invitation to repentance remains open.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us.” — 1 John 1:9

True repentance means turning away from sin and pursuing a life that honours God.

 

7. GOD IS LOVE

Perhaps no attribute of God is more comforting than His love.

God created humanity out of love and gave us the freedom to choose whether we would love Him in return.

Love cannot be forced.

It must be freely given.

Although humanity fell into sin, God did not abandon His creation.

Instead, He provided redemption through Yeshua, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice made reconciliation with God possible.

“God is love.” — 1 John 4:16

“This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” — 1 John 4:10

God’s love does not remove His justice.

Rather, it reveals His desire that every person should repent and receive eternal life.

 

8. GOD IS THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE

God is both our loving Father and our righteous Judge.

These two truths are not contradictory—they perfectly complement one another.

His mercy invites us to repentance.

His justice ensures that evil will not have the final word.

Scripture teaches that every person will one day give an account before God.

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?” — Matthew 16:26

Because God is perfectly just, we can trust that every judgment He makes will be righteous.

Our greatest priority should not be worldly success but standing before Him with faithful hearts.

 

Conclusion

The more I learn about God’s character, the more I admire Him.

His holiness calls me higher.

His mercy gives me hope.

His forgiveness offers restoration.

His love gives me confidence.

His justice reminds me to live with eternity in view.

Knowing who God is transforms how we live.

The more we seek Him through His Word, the more our hearts are shaped to reflect His character.
